2020 highlights

It’s been a challenging year!

It’s been a challenging year for us all and I would just like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement during 2020. Despite the challenges I feel its been a productive time for the LDC.

We’ll be celebrating our 10th anniversary next year and we’re planning some events to celebrate this milestone.

First Line Leaders

We experienced some great outcomes through our FLL projects. The project teams worked in collaboration across a range of organisations and delivered a range of recommendations to organisational leaders. The projects researched best practice around employee engagement and also the selection and onboarding of new employees. The recommendations included how to engage FLL in the implementation of these organisational improvements.

Thank you to everyone involved for their leadership and commitment – Steve Perrin, Paul Myhill, Richard Woodhead, Chris Smith, Alex Carter, Gavin Courtney, Tom Hall & Gavin Sayles. Also a thank you to Tony Fitton for his mentoring support.

We’ll continue to support the teams and make sure the projects reach their full potential.

Health & Safety Forum

We introduced our new Health & Safety forum in February 2020. Our first event included a benchmarking visit to DS Smith Featherstone and Ardagh Glass Knottingley and we’ll look to organise further visits during 2021.

During the summer we started to build a relationship with the team from Let’s Reset. Suki Thompson is the founder and CEO of Let’s Reset. In November the Let’s Reset team delivered a 2-hour virtual workshop on mental health and employee wellbeing. During the workshop Portakabin also presented their strategy around employee wellbeing. We had around 30 people on the call and the feedback was excellent.

2021 will see us offer a range of events in partnership with the Let’s Reset team.

Our partnership with Durham University Business School – International Centre for Leadership and Followership.

We work closely with the team from the ICLF and they provide a range of leadership insights based on their global research activities. During 2020 we engaged with the Durham Survey – Leading Through Crisis – Management Challenges During COVID 19. We had great response to the survey from our member organisations and we have already been involved in a number of forums to understand the outcomes and identify some priorities for 2021. Thank you to everyone who completed the survey and also to Suzanne & Karolina who designed and managed the survey.

The Durham team also provide support around our work with FLL and we look to building on this work in 2021.

Our 2-hour virtual workshops

As a direct response to COVID 19 we have introduced a comprehensive range of 2 hour virtual workshops. Alex Firmin has done an excellent job in delivering the workshops and the feedback has been really encouraging.

Our initial workshops covered:

  • Coaching
  • Designing and delivering a virtual workshop
  • Time management & prioritisation
  • Mentoring
  • Engaging customers and sales teams in our new virtual world
  • Employers branding
  • Employee wellbeing
  • Standard operating procedures and assessing competency in the workplace

We feel confident that the virtual workshops have provided an effective learning environment and based on the feedback we’ll be building on this offering in 2021.

Thank you to everyone who has delivered the workshops and to those who have participated.

Our schools project

We’ve managed to keep supporting our schools project during 2020. With direct support from Ardagh, Marpak & DS Smith we’ve been able to support Parklands Primary School and St Josephs Primary School over the summer holidays and in the lead up to Christmas. Supporting children and their families is a key element of our strategy and our ambitions will increase during 2021.

We’ve formed a leadership team around our schools project and we have our first meeting on January 26th 2021. To support our 10th anniversary some of our planned activities will provide direct financial support to the schools project.

Our first LDC newsletter will appear in early January and we look forward to building on our work and the relationships we have created.

As we approach the Christmas holidays I’d like to wish everyone a healthy and peaceful festive period. News of a vaccine gives us renewed optimism for 2021 and we can move forward with our lives.

Take care and very best wishes

Graham
